The Loss on Ignition (LOI) test in cement analysis is a crucial method for assessing the quantity of volatile materials within cement samples. In this process, a specific amount of the cement sample is heated at high temperatures to drive off volatile components such as carbonates, organic matter, and chemically combined water.
During the heating process, these volatile materials are expelled, leaving behind the non-volatile residue, primarily cementitious materials like silicates and aluminates. The weight difference before and after heating represents the loss of volatile components, expressed as a percentage of the initial weight of the sample.
The LOI test is essential in cement quality control, providing insights into the composition and stability of cement, aiding in optimising production processes, and ensuring the final cement product meets industry standards and performance requirements.
